New Interim Director, Yvette Heryford!

Friends of Love INC,

Every family, company & community has a culture.  It is written about in the professional world all the time today.  Companies are putting emphasis on determining what type of culture they want to create in order for employees to be happy and content in the workplace.

Have you ever considered that a community has a culture too?  As an active part of the community I have the privilege of connecting with many people...natives as well as people new to our little town of Newberg.  I often ask them what they have noticed about Newberg or the surrounding area so far, or what determined why they chose to live here.  In these conversations there is a consistent element that comes through: “Newberg feels different. It seems as though people care about each other here.” I just smile.

Yes indeed, the culture we enjoy here is unique. It is a group of individuals that cares about each other.  There is a strong presence of faith here...many churches that serve a variety of people, all finding a place that feels like home, where they can be discipled and developed into people attentive to the needs around them and the depravity of our hearts. Having a long history with the Love INC ministry, I have to believe that it has had a large influence on building this culture in our community.

As with any organization there are seasons—-seasons with various leaders who continue to carry the torch of the cause.  The Love INC board has been diligently searching for a new director to lead our ministry.  Our efforts have not produced a clear candidate during this process.  Understanding the negative effect this can have on the organization and seeing how difficult it is for everyone involved, we prayed and God has presented a solution.  The board has invited me to be the interim director of Love INC.

We often don’t get a sneak preview of God’s great plan, and I can honestly say, “I didn’t see this coming.” Yet it feels as natural as putting on my comfiest pair of shoes.

I have had the privilege of serving the ministry for over twelve years of the fifteen years Love INC has been active.  My volunteer experience has been broad—clearinghouse reception, intake interviews, Relational Ministry mentor, mentor trainer and support, class instructor, and monthly shelter hosts with my husband for over seven years.  Recently I was asked to join the board of directors, and as of this month I have stepped into the director position.  My professional background is as colorful as my volunteer experience. It includes real estate sales and business owner for over twenty years, and more recently, business consulting and career coaching.

There are two distinct elements that have had a profound impact in developing my relationship with Jesus: 1. Over 20 years of BSF bible study and 2. Serving through the Love INC ministry. I want to invite you to experience the same life changing experience.

In the brief time I have stepped into this position, my heart has been filled by once again seeing the impact that collaborated love can have on an individual’s life!  It is great to be back in the arms of the Love INC ministry.

“In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use.  Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.”

-2 Timothy 2:20-22

Will you join me in being a vessel of transformation and hope to the hurting people within our town?

Relational Ministry Participants Have Paid Off Over $3,000 of Debt Thanks to You!

RM-Thank-You-Edit.jpg

After completing all of their measured goals and almost perfect attendance, you have matched $1 for $1 over $3,000 of Relational Ministry participant's debt. And that is just in the last 3 months!

A few participants wanted to thank you for your donations:

"Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of Money Management. I am thankful for the money match program as it has helped me to apply a larger deposit than I could afford alone. The deposit was applied to the City of Dundee where I have fines that needed to be payed or put on a payment plan in order to obtain my license with DMV.

With your help, and the deposit with money match, I was able to get on a payment plan with the City of Dundee. This is HUGE!

With my whole heart, Thank you."

-"Cherie"

"I appreciate your Money Match gift because of the $200 given toward my gall bladder removal bill I am able to move forward with getting my much needed dental work worked on. I'm so thankful."

-"Lisa"

"I want to thank you for providing the funds for this program to help me get ahead on my debt it brings me so much closer to my goal of paying this debt off. I appreciate all your help, thank you!"

Volunteers Cut $2,000 Shelter Repair Down to Less Than $50!

The bathroom floor in the shelter had been leaking for a while and Love INC received a professional quote for over $2,000 in repairs, with the possibility of more depending on the extent of the damage.

Trying to save some money, we asked some churches if they had any volunteers willing to donate their labor. Ray and Ashley Helgeson from Rock Point Church jumped at the chance!

Within two weeks the bathroom floor was completely repaired, and they found no additional damage. The best part: the final bill was only $46.58.

Join us in thanking the Helgeson's for their precious time and labor. The ladies in the shelter have a functioning bathroom again!

The Community Drop-In Center exists to provide a safe place for people who are in need of food and other essentials while getting indoors, out of the weather. We are open daytime hours during the week as a place to go for resources and respite. It is a place to rest, get a bite to eat and visit with one another. It is a place to experience community. We serve men, women and families, many who are without adequate shelter, as well as anyone in the community that needs some support.

We serve both breakfast and lunch, and we distribute items to help people stay warm like hats, gloves, socks, and hand warmers. Personal care and hygiene items are available for those who need them.

A computer, Wi-Fi, phones, and a place to receive mail help our guests overcome communication struggles. We have a kids’ play area for those who come in with children, and we keep track of and celebrate our guest’s birthdays.

Two couples who are clients of Love INC have recently purchased homes!

"Ron" and "Meg" came to Love INC just 9 months ago. They were staying in an RV with their two young children and were looking for help getting housing. The Relational Ministry Money Management class was starting just two days after they did their intake and they jumped right in.

In that class they learned how to better manage their money and with changes they made in their lives, along with the help Love INC gave them through our Money Match program, they were soon able to purchase a home!

They've continued in Relational Ministry and have now completed three of our classes, with plans to take their final class this fall.

"Eve" and "Yanis," along with their two little girls, came to Love INC just two months ago, looking for help with financial struggles. They were given vouchers for several of Gap Ministries, then they started right into the Relational Ministry Money Management class that started just three days after their intake.

With the help you gave them, along with implementing the principles they learned in Money Management, they have been able to finally cross the last hurdles they needed to complete to be able to purchase a house.

They're just waiting for the final inspection and paperwork to be signed before they can move in.

You are a part of these families' beautiful stories. Thank you for making the funds and programs available to help families such as these.

15th Anniversary Celebration a Success!

15YrPhoto.jpg

A HUGE thank you to everyone who attended the 15th birthday of Love INC last month! It was a great time of food, fellowship and unity under the common goal of transforming lives In the Name of Christ.

Volunteers, staff and clients gave heartwarming testimonies about how their lives have been shaped by your work at Love INC.

It was incredible to see how God has moved through the years to unite denominations together and truly mobilize each one of us.

A special thank you goes to The Water Oasis and Storr's Smokehouse for being extra generous for this event!

15 Years of Love INC!

15-year-pic.png

Because of you, 11,569 men, women and children have received essential items, skills and housing In the Name of Christ.

You have given them a warm smile during one of the worst moments of their lives.

You have given them a gas card when their tank was on empty. Shampoo when they haven't been able to shower in a week. Medicine delivered to their door when they were sick. A bed to sleep in instead of on the street.

You have walked with them and listened to them as they learned how to take control of their finances, jobs and relationships.

Most importantly, you've given them the unconditional love that only comes from Christ.

Thank you for supporting and praying and giving to our community. You have made the past fifteen years possible. And God isn't done transforming us yet!

RV Club Blesses Newberg Family At Christmas

In October the Pacers RV club asked Love INC how they could bless a client with a monetary gift to help with their family Christmas. We suggested paying a utility bill for one of our families so their own money could be used for whatever they need for Christmas. The club gave a gift of $300 and asked that we give it to a Relational Ministry client with children who would benefit from not having to pay their PGE bill this month so they can put their own money towards Christmas for their kids.

We chose a gentleman who is very deserving. He is a divorced father raising three kids who also works full time at a restaurant. He attended our Money Management class this fall and has made great strides to better his financial situation, which was left in a bit of a mess after his divorce. He attended every class session, completed all of his homework, was engaged in group discussions, and has begun paying off his debt.

He was thrilled and humbled when I told him he had been chosen for this generous gift. He told me to tell whoever was the donor that "dinner is on me". I explained to him that it came from an RV club and that they would be happy just to know how appreciative he is. He's been working on paying off a past-due PGE bill and the $300 gift pretty much paid that off. So now, instead of making that payment this month, he'll have money to buy gifts for his children.

What an awesome gift of Christmas generosity!

Friends Became Family This Past Thanksgiving!

Sometimes the holiday season is the darkest time of the year. It was that case for a lot of clients AND volunteers last year. But one volunteer took what was supposed to be a sad holiday and with the help of the Lord, made it memorable for the guests in the shelter:

“As we were concluding our weekly Bible study one Wednesday, I asked the ladies living at the transitional house if they had any Thanksgiving plans.

The feeling in the room quickly shifted. The ladies’ countenances went from incredible joy, having just enjoyed a wonderful study and discussion of the 13th chapter in the book of John, to a heaviness and sorrow.

For some, tears began to flow, and others grew quiet. As I began to probe a bit I learned that as blessed as they feel to be living in the house, this year they would not be enjoying a “Hallmark” Thanksgiving with their families.

For some, distance would prohibit them from being with their family. For others, broken relationships would be the cause.

This Thanksgiving my husband and I were going to be alone due to both of those reasons. We had decided that an early dinner at J’s diner and some football on TV would be the extent of our festivities this year.

When one of the ladies exclaimed that she would be at the house and anyone else who wanted to join her could. She said that she would be making potato salad. I asked if she would adopt me and my husband for the day. She beamed and said of course!

Soon everyone was piping in with what they wanted to make.

Thursday afternoon, as we sat around the table enjoying the feast that the Lord had provided, we reflected on the fact that like the original pilgrims, each one of us had left our former homes to start a new life.

Sometimes it’s really hard and we miss those whom we can’t be with, but we were all grateful for the new family that God handpicked to travel this journey with us. Our hearts were truly full and our day was wonderfully blessed.”

River Street Church of God Provides Showers

We can’t do it alone. No congregation can, nor should. I think we often get caught up in wanting the PR opportunity when we’re doing something good. Maybe it will attract visitors and grow our church, we think. But Jesus’ upside-down kingdom cares not for such vainglory. He called us to work together—to launch into the darkness of the world arm-in-arm. And so, when Love INC moved last year, losing the capability to offer showers to our community, our church started looking for partners to help us put a shower in our building.

It didn’t take long. Within a month a group had pulled together to make a shower happen. Habitat for Humanity offered to install the shower at-cost. Chehalem Presbyterian Church became financial partners. Patrons will be able to use personal care kits provided by Grace Baptist. And Love INC helped us apply for grants and think through the logistics.  With the team assembled, we set to raising the money needed. It took a while, but we got there in May. Habitat began the work then and over the course of the last few months we’ve been doing all that we could to get the shower ready for use.

Now we’re just a few weeks away from being ready to open. We’re excited for the opportunity to show our world what can be done when Christians link arms for the work of Christ. We’re excited to see how our co-laboring will bless and dignify those who will utilize the shower. We’re excited to share in a work bigger than our little congregation.

The shower will open in November. To begin with it will operate on Mondays from 11a-1pm and Wednesdays from 5-6p. We’d love to widen the circle of Christians dedicated to this much-needed project. If you’re interested in volunteering, just ask: pastor.mattingalls@gmail.com.

All His Peace,

Matt Ingalls

River Street Church of God

In just two months you helped “Matt” and “Christy” go from homeless to self-sufficient!

Matt and Christy are a young couple with a baby who came to Love INC recently, in need of help with just about everything. They were "couch surfing" with a friend, didn't have jobs, and weren't able to get jobs because they didn't have ID's or the means to pay the fees to get them.

Several of you, through our partner churches, helped them with things like bikes, personal care items, bus passes, Non-Food Pantry items, diapers and clothes for their baby, and laundry service. Other community partners also helped by providing free counseling and physical therapy sessions (thanks to George Fox University) and free eye exams and glasses for both of them (thanks to VSP Global Eyes of Hope).

You also helped us pay for their new identification cards!

All of these small steps led to a giant hand up for Matt, Christy and their precious baby boy.

They contacted us this week to let YOU know that Matt now has a job and they have become self-sufficient! Thank you for your generosity and allowing God to orchestrate all of these positive changes for this lovely young couple!

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” – 2 Peter 3:9

New Residents of Newberg Accept Christ During Intake!

We met “Chase” and “Sandy” last week when they came to Love INC in search of supplies to stock their new apartment.

They just moved to Newberg from Salem, where they had been homeless for several years. Karen, our Program Manager, was conducting the intake and while it is part of the intake process to ask if the clients would like to hear about Jesus, she felt a special pull from the Holy Spirit.

A lot of new clients are already Christians or not interested in hearing the gospel, so Karen was pleasantly surprised when Chase and Sandy were eager to hear the good news. Chase even mentioned that he didn’t deserve God’s grace after all of the bad things he had done, which Karen quickly refuted with the Truth!

After going through the Gospel, both Chase and Sandy decided to trust the Lord!

Please pray for them as they continue on this new journey and that they find a great local church.

“I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. ” -Galatians 2:20

Letter From A Client

We recently received the following excerpt of a letter from a client:

Dear Love INC.,

Just a feel-good story on my Leap of Faith Journey… I am so broke that I live my financial life by one tank of gas. It costs approx. $45.00 to fill my tank up. I was clearing out my stuff that I had moved with and had a few items that I though would be a good fit in Aurora antique stores. My expectations on the few items were to sell [and earn] maybe two takes of gas total. After I spoke with the store owner a while, she offered me $200 for all. I was very happy and so was she. We made the transaction and I was on my way. After being so thankful and in prayers, I believe that it was the Holy Spirit that came into my heart and just simply said give half of it away.

If you remember me in my conversation when I was at the office picking up basic household supplies I mentioned that when I get back on my feet Love Inc. is going to be my choice of charity [to give back to]…Well, I’m not even close to being back on my feet, but that being said, your organization, Love Inc,. is my choice for the $100.

Thank you and God does bless us in mysterious ways.

Hillside Inn

We received a note from a former volunteer praising the Hillside Inn, and we just had to share it!

“I just wanted to tell you that because of your resource list, when I was training to become a volunteer, I became acquainted with Hilllside Inn, and my 22-year-old son became a resident there last month.  It's been a real blessing and we have to thank Love INC!!!

As you may know, Hillside is the Victorian purple house on Main St across from the NW Fish Market.  It's operated by Hillside Church, which meets in the small stone church there.  The goal is to help young people who are in transition and need to regroup.  They don't take serious addicts or serious criminal offences.  They do offer light structure and mentoring. People can stay for up to a year.  They pay about $500 in rent and expenses.

I really recommend it!”

So do we!

A Complete Transformation

When we met Teresa she was severely traumatized after experiencing homelessness. She had worked her whole life and due to severe, drug-resistant depression, she found herself without a job and no place to live.

“I’ve had so many jobs in my life. I’ve worked since I was 15, I’ve been on my own since I was 17, I’ve always had a job.” Her situation was incredibly difficult to process.

She was admitted into the Transitional Living Program (TLP) and upon arrival rated herself a 0 out of 10. She struggled to make eye contact with anyone, and due to anxiety and depression could barely complete the smallest task.

Through constant support and coaching from the Love INC staff, Teresa began to see changes both inside and out.

She started walking outside most days, applying for jobs and going to Relational Ministry and other community classes to interact with other people in our community going through similar situations.

Cooking, completing house chores and yard work became a regular activity. She started to volunteer at local service agencies while looking for work. Our Transitional Living Coach even commented “Teresa is looking the best she has since arriving here almost 10 months ago. She is on task and engaged!”

The most exciting (among many) moment came when Teresa was hired at a service agency to be a resource advocate for Homeless and Housing!

“God has put me in a position to be a resource advocate for homeless and housing! Getting me back out in the workforce in something that is just right there, I’m in it, I can relate. And putting me with people just like me! I’ve walked in their shoes, I’m still in their shoes, I understand completely.”

After working for several months, Teresa was able to save enough money to move into next step housing at the Hillside Inn. She is paying rent and thriving!

Teresa is just another example of God’s incredible transforming power. Just one look at Teresa and you would know that she is a new person, inside and out.

"Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” - Ezekiel 36:26
